Building Strong Foundations in Maths: Reception Class at Vita et Pax Prep School

Posted: 15th October 2024

At Vita et Pax Preparatory School in Enfield, North London, we believe in building a strong foundation in mathematics from an early age. Our Reception class has been engaging in hands-on activities to explore numbers, helping to foster a love for learning and developing key numeracy skills.

Recently, our Reception pupils have been busy creating number lines up to 20 using Numicon. Numicon is a unique resource that helps young learners visualize numbers, making abstract concepts more accessible. By physically arranging the number shapes, children gain a concrete understanding of counting and number sequencing. This tactile approach is particularly effective in building their confidence in early math skills.

In addition to number lines, the children have been working on finding number bonds to 4. Number bonds are pairs of numbers that add up to a given total, and they are fundamental to developing addition and subtraction skills later on. By using visual and hands-on tools like Numicon, our Reception pupils can see how different numbers come together to form 4, making abstract mathematical ideas tangible and easy to grasp.

At Vita et Pax Prep School, we are committed to providing a nurturing and stimulating learning environment where every child is encouraged to reach their full potential. Activities like creating number lines and exploring number bonds not only reinforce mathematical concepts but also promote problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity in our young learners. We are proud to watch our Reception class grow in confidence and ability as they embark on their mathematical journey at Vita et Pax Prep in Enfield.

This foundation in early mathematics will set them up for success as they progress through their educational journey.
