EYFS have been celebrating Chinese New Year. They created lanterns, gold images for luck and looked at similarities and differences of Chinese numerals. Children also got to dress up in traditional Chinese clothes and met a colourful, friendly dragon.
This year is the year of the dragon, each year in the Chinese calendar is represented by one of the 12 animals of the zodiac: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.
According to the traditional legend of The Great Race as Hongjun Ma tells us, the Jade Emperor wanted to select 12 animals to be his guards. The faster they reached Heaven’s gates the higher they would rank in the running order of the years.
