Fantastically Great Women Who Changed The World

Celebrating Fantastic Women in Year 3

This half term, Year 3 has been diving into the inspiring world of Fantastically Great Women Who Changed The World, a book that showcases the remarkable achievements of women who dared to be different and made a lasting impact.

Last week, we focused on Gertrude Ederle, a trailblazing American Olympic swimmer. Not only was she the first woman to swim across the English Channel, but she also set a new record by completing the swim two hours faster than any man before her! What’s even more inspiring is that Gertrude overcame personal challenges – she began losing her hearing at a young age, and it worsened as she grew older. This led us to explore the causes and effects of deafness in class, and sparked a strong sense of empathy and inclusivity among the students. In fact, the children were so inspired by Gertrude’s story that they wrote persuasive letters to Miss Gay, asking if we could learn sign language as part of our class activities. We can’t wait to see what happens next!

This week, we turned our attention to Emmeline Pankhurst, the renowned suffragette who fought tirelessly for women’s right to vote. Through creating information leaflets and engaging in thoughtful discussions, the children gained a deeper understanding of the importance of gender equality. We even made a surprising discovery – Mrs Newton, one of our very own teachers, is a distant relative of Emmeline Pankhurst!

Through these stories of remarkable women, Year 3 is learning not only about history, but also about the power of perseverance, courage, and standing up for what’s right. Watch this space for more updates on our journey of discovery and empowerment!
