Displays

Introduction

The quality of display work within a school has much to say about the values and ethos of the school.  This policy is written guidance. 

Rationale

The School acknowledges the importance of good displays in classrooms and around the school.  Some celebrate the children’s work and others are an aid to their learning.  Displays should be related to the recent, current or impending learning of pupils.

Aims

  • To provide a visually stimulating environment
  • To give purpose and value to all children’s work
  • To give confidence and a sense of achievement
  • To develop an aesthetic awareness in the children
  • To provide an opportunity to look at the work of others
  • To encourage a positive attitude to the environment
  • To encourage a higher standard of work
  • To enhance teaching and learning
  • To stimulate interest and promote development of creative thinking

 Basic Guidelines for display

  • All work should be relevant and mounted with a neat, even border all around the edge.
  • Unless for a specified purpose, work should never be cut by hand but always trimmed cleanly with a guillotine to ensure an even cut.
  • Give careful thought to the choice of background to give maximum effect
  • An overcrowded display may lose impact
  • Use contrast, lines etc. to draw the eye to a focal point
  • If using staples, ensure they are all removed carefully, using a staple remover tool
  • Always title and label the display
  • Lettering must be clear, precise and in an appropriate font suitable for the age group and/or purpose.
  • Written work displayed should be easily read, showing a broad range of abilities.
  • Use questioning to stimulate and develop the children’s thinking skills.
  • At children’s eye level wherever possible.
  • While keeping displays fresh looking, still be mindful of unnecessary waste.

Displays should be bordered and changed regularly, remaining relevant to classroom/school activities.

              

CHECK LIST FOR DISPLAYS

Here are some questions to ask yourself, when planning a display.

 

  • What is the purpose of your display?
  • How can you make it interactive? e.g. Are there questions for the children to consider or if it is a table display, are there objects to handle?
  • Is it cross-curricular?
  • Is the learning objective clear?
  • Does it celebrate diversity? e.g. cultural, religious and social.
  • Is there a balance of writing, pictures, posters, photographs, charts, diagrams etc.?
  • Is your spelling correct?
  • Is the work of all ability groups included?
  • Has the display got a main heading and sub-headings, describing the work carried out?
  • Is all work neatly mounted? [a 1cm border is usually most effective]
  • Are all the edges cleanly cut with a guillotine?
  • Have you read the ‘Display Policy?
  • Does it catch the eye? [Stand back and try to look as if for the first time.]
